Book Cover Work in Progress

I started work on this over a week ago, and I’ve hit a bit of a wall. I didn’t go through this stage properly on my first book, and I don’t have much experience with image editing software, but I really wanted to have a go this time. Hubby recommended using Paint Shop Pro 6, which he has on his computer and which is apparently simpler than the later options – good thing, too. This is as far as I got before I got stuck. I am happy with the one branch, but gutted that I can’t turn the whole thing into the image in my head yet. Will be getting some technical assistance when himself and I find a day that neither of us is working – a rare commodity these days!

Perspective on Selling

Selling, marketing, promotion – I’ve always felt that I wasn’t very good at it. In fact I tend to turn mentally into a bit of a quivering jelly at the thought. Which is a bit of a problem for an author, quite frankly. (more…)

Kitchen Table, Creative Women and Cake

Three of my favourite things combined this morning in a planning session for a very exciting project coming up later this year. Not ready to tell you what yet, but it made me wonder what ups your inspiration level from its already excellent level up into the stratosphere?

Barking at Bookshops

When I wrote Their Cancer – Your Journey it was my first book. I was a very good girl and did some research in local bookshops to see how books on cancer were represented – simple answer, they weren’t. The only book with the word cancer in the title was ‘Anticancer – A New Way of Life’ – which is basically a nutrition book. I spoke to a member of staff in one shop, who told me they did not buy in cancer books as they were felt to be ‘too depressing’ to have on display. So any efforts put into marketing that book to bookshops were definitely ‘barking up the wrong tree’.
But this time might be different. (more…)

How Big is a Book?

As part of my ‘Show and Tell’ process I’m going to be creating a first draft of my book cover – but before I do that I needed to know how big the book is going to be – not the number of pages but the physical size of the cover. How do you decide how big a book is going to be? Well the accepted wisdom is that you go to a bookshop and look at the size that books in your genre tend to be. But since when did I deal in accepted wisdom? I’m going on experience, (more…)

Writing a Baby Bio

This is another piece of promotional material, this time about me rather than the book. Or is it? A baby bio is a short piece about a person – as my friend Linda says a ‘who you are, what you do and why you do it’. We all have so many aspects, though, that any baby bio is only going to pick out key elements and I think that the one I am writing is probably for the back of the book. (more…)

Starting on Research

Having got a little promotional writing under my belt and having developed the content of the book (with the idea of Seven Simple Strategies) it was now time to be brave enough to do some research. Up to now the idea was just too delicate to expose it to the harsh realities of looking what else was out there.

First I started by looking up other books with the title ‘Out on a Limb’. (more…)
